Hawkes Bay

05Concept

The primary idea behind this revised proposal is to focus upon the two important elements in the brief:
1. People who have donated
2. The architecture that their donations are contributing toward

With this in mind we propose a simple solution to present the architecture through the names of those who have donated.

The idea is based upon the use of typography as architecture. Software platforms such as Adobe Flash and Processing allow text to be represented in three dimensional space and become elements in a complex form.
Its difficult to articulate in words how we consider this will appear, but the following precedents may help.
The first is an example of an iPhone application developed by the digital artist Andrea Muller.
You will see from the video below how characters leave the page to form an animated three dimensional scene.

The idea has some roots in Studio H5’s music video entitled Alex Gopher, which depicts the city using only typefaces. Far more ‘garish’ that we would envisage, the representation of the city as text only indicates how Hawkes Bay Museum could be visualised through patrons names.

The following examples of Processing ‘Sketches’ demonstrate how characters and pixels can be used to create animations within a three dimensional space. The first piece is interactive – click within the frame to add new characters. The second happens very quickly! If you miss it you may have to reload this page or click on the link below the Sketch.

Further inspiration is Jeffrey Shaws Legible City piece that was exhibited in 1988 and allowed visitors to a gallery to cycle through a city of text.
