A design project is a little like hacking through the jungle looking for Dr. Livingstone in the secret hope of discovering the source of the Nile. A designer is a little like a Swiss Army Knife – not an expert in any given field but rather a general purpose tool that is pretty handy in most situations. This lecture is a recounting of personal stumblings in the jungle over the last 5 years in an attempt to discover ‘How to Design’. The mistakes and unexpected events of a number of projects will be explored to discover their valuable insights.
Mark Kobine is an independent designer working in Scotland specialising in products and furniture. Studying at Edinburgh College of Art he gained first class honours and Masters in Product Design and has exhibited in the UK and in London at the V&A. He is particularly interested in creativity, materiality, our relationship to that material and uses a process that emphasises immediacy and making. In 2011 he won the Design History Society essay prize for confusing Heidegger and the TV remote control.
